Ryan Gander X Edgar Degas – Pas de Deux
This catalogue, compiled on the occasion of the exhibition Ryan Gander X Edgar Degas – Pas de Deux at Museum Beelden aan Zee, offers a wide range of texts about the work of contemporary artist Ryan Gander and the historical influence of Edgar Degas.
In the introduction, museum director Brigitte Bloksma discusses the setup of this special exhibition. Sandra Kisters from Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen addresses the historical and contemporary perception of Degas’ Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans (1880-81). The interview by Lydia Figes with Ryan Gander himself sheds light on his longstanding interest in Degas’ ballerina and his curiosity about the dynamic role of the spectator in the museum. Finally, the catalogue contains a complete overview of the exhibited works, supplemented with quotes from fourteen-year-olds. At the invitation of the museum, they contributed to the ongoing interpretation of Gander's series, which playfully refers to Degas.
