Love over Gold

Museum Beelden aan Zee presents the first solo exhibition of visual artist Vera Gulikers (1991) in the Netherlands: Love over Gold. In her sculptures and paintings, she explores the girlish and feminine in art. Her iconic sculptures of colorful female figures with swaying legs like a vacuum cleaner hose are an ironic reference to the prevailing beauty ideal. Gulikers often explores the theme of the self-portrait. Hidden in a dog's body, painting, or mop, you encounter her face. In the Cabinet and the Sea Hall, the museum showcases both her paintings and her latest and previously unseen sculptures.

In 2017, Gulikers won the Royal Award for Free Painting. She studied at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, Sint Lucas in Antwerp, and the ABKM in Maastricht. Her work is included in collections such as Akzo Nobel Art Foundation, Bonnefanten, ING, and DSM.

Prior to the exhibition, Brigitte Bloksma, director of Museum Beelden aan Zee and curator of Love over Gold, spoke with the artist in her studio: interview with Vera Gulikers in NRC supplement of October 2024.

What do visitors say?

Underneath this cheerful visual language lies a critical view of female stereotypes. The elongated legs mock an impossible ideal of slimness while simultaneously depicting the societal pressure on women to bend over backwards in various ways.
