Jan van Munster

Museum Beelden aan Zee presents a solo exhibition of Jan van Munster. The artist, who passed away in 2024, is regarded as one of the foremost innovators in Dutch sculpture and installation art. With this presentation, the museum pays tribute to this master of minimalist art.

The exhibition is built around a group of sculptures donated to the museum in 2025 by Van Munster’s heir. These works form the starting point of the exhibition.

The central theme in Van Munster’s oeuvre is energy. Phenomena such as temperature, magnetism, radioactivity, and electricity were for him not only physical principles but also poetic sources of visual imagination. In his work, he made the invisible visible – entirely in the spirit of Paul Klee, who once said: “Art does not represent the visible; it makes visible.”
